Miranda Watkins

Ritter/Zamet is pleased to present the first solo gallery exhibition in the UK of British designer, Miranda Watkins.

Miranda Watkins’ exquisite mobiles and chandeliers present a unique fusion of elegance and structural precision. Following in the trajectory of the great kinetic-sculpture pioneers Naum Gabo and Alexander Calder, Watkins’ mobile designs explore the circumnavigation of delicately balanced elements in space in order to create infinite configurations of form. Continually redefining the environment around them as they move, they construct a network of interconnected planes that carve out and penetrate their surroundings whilst always remaining in a perfect state of equilibrium.

All Watkins’ designs are precision engineered and flawlessly hand-finished in a range of high-grade industrial materials. The mobiles are fabricated from stainless steel, anodised aluminium, Formica and laminate frames and panels that rotate around an articulated central axis suspended from a stainless steel ceiling unit. Her chandeliers present a cascade of overlapping semi-translucent Perspex, anodised aluminium, Polycarbonate and acrylic panels that diffuse the central light source outwards into the surrounding space.

For her show at Ritter/Zamet, Watkins will show three mobiles and one chandelier that will be installed to actively engage with the surrounding gallery. All of these are limited edition pieces: the mobiles are editions of 3 and the light is an edition of 5. Her work is also available to order or commission.

Since graduating from the Royal College of Art in London, Miranda Watkins worked extensively in the international film industry creating costume props and special effect costumes for many high profile movies. In 1998 she won the Sainsbury’s Scholarship and set up her own studio and showroom at London’s OXO Tower Wharf. She was appointed as Metals Designer for Calvin Klein in New York from 2000 to 2003 and since returning to London has established Miranda Watkins Design presenting her own collections including furniture, tabletop products and jewellery along with her bespoke and limited edition mobiles and light installations.

Miranda Watkins’ designs are in public collections including The Royal Institute of British Architects Silver Collection (London), Kensington Palace (London) and Pallent House Gallery (Chichester) as well as corporate and private collections in the USA, Japan, Canada, Australia, Dubai and Europe. Her designs have also been featured in many international publications and newspapers over recent years including: Architectural Review, Blueprint, The Daily Telegraph Magazine, Design Week, Dwell, Elle Decoration, Frame, FX, The Evening Standard (Homes & Property), The Guardian (Space), Grand Designs, House and Garden, The Independent, Interior Design, Living Etc, The New York Times, The Observer Magazine, The Sunday Times Magazine, Surface, Vogue and Wallpaper.
